Flooring for Aging in Place, Done With Care

Safe, comfortable floors for your home or the home of someone you love, installed by people who treat your family like their own.

Whether you're planning to stay in your own home as the years go on, or you're helping a parent or loved one stay safely in theirs, the right flooring makes a real difference. It can make every step steadier, roll easier for walkers and wheelchairs, and take less work to keep clean. At Koeber's Interiors, a family owned flooring store in Beaverton since 1963, we help homeowners, families, and caregivers choose floors that make home safer and easier to live in.

And we don't just hand you a sample and wish you luck. We walk with you through every step, from choosing the right floor to measuring your home to moving the furniture on installation day.

Why Flooring Matters When Aging in Place

Floors play a big role in how safe and comfortable a home feels. Thick, plush carpet can catch feet and make walkers and wheelchairs hard to push. Slick surfaces can feel uncertain underfoot. The best aging in place flooring is:

  • Steady underfoot with good grip and a smooth, even surface

  • Easy to roll across for walkers, wheelchairs, and rolling carts

  • Durable enough to handle daily wear without showing it

  • Low maintenance so it stays clean without a lot of effort

Our Recommended Flooring for Aging in Place

Low Pile Carpet

Low pile carpet gives you the warmth and comfort of carpet without the bulk. Its short, dense fibers are easier to walk on, easier for wheels and walkers to glide across, and much less likely to snag a toe or a cane. It's also highly durable and simple to vacuum, so it looks good with very little upkeep. A great choice for bedrooms, living rooms, and anywhere you want a softer feel.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate is one of our favorite choices for aging in place. It's a wood based product with a tough wear layer that stands up beautifully to walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids. Many of our laminates have textured surfaces for added grip, and most are waterproof or water resistant to everyday spills. Laminate is also forgiving of imperfect subfloors, so it works well throughout the whole home.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Luxury vinyl offers a smooth, comfortable surface that's easy to clean and handles moisture well, making it a nice fit for kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways. Many styles feature textured finishes that help with traction. LVP performs best over very level subfloors, and our team will check that during your free measure.

A Calmer, Cleaner Installation

Most laminate and luxury vinyl floors install as floating floors, which means no sanding, no stains, no strong fumes, and very little dust. For many families, keeping disruption to a minimum is a big deal, and this makes the process much gentler on the household.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best flooring for aging in place?

Low pile carpet, laminate, and luxury vinyl plank are all excellent choices. They're durable, easy to clean, and comfortable to walk on. Many laminate and vinyl options include textured surfaces for better traction. The best fit depends on the room and how the space is used, and we're happy to help you decide.

What flooring works best for walkers and wheelchairs?

Laminate holds up especially well under wheels and walkers. Low pile carpet is also a good option when you want a softer feel, since the short fibers roll much more easily than plush carpet.

Is laminate or luxury vinyl slip resistant?

Many of the laminate and luxury vinyl products we carry have textured finishes designed for added grip. Stop by our showroom to feel the difference in person.

Will installation disrupt our home?

We work to keep things as easy as possible. Laminate and luxury vinyl usually install without sanding or finishing, so there's very little dust or odor. Install time depends on the layout and how much furniture is involved, and we'll walk you through what to expect ahead of time.

Do you move furniture?

Yes. Our crews can generally move furniture as part of the installation process and handle it with care. We ask that small items, breakables, and electronics be put away beforehand. We can also offer moving referrals.
